Region Skåne appoints a strategic advisor for e-health and m-health

Region Skåne has recruited Mats Ekstrand as a strategic advisor for e-health and m-health. His mission is primarily to coordinate the development of mobile IT services related to health care.

Mats Ekstrand comes from the position as CEO of Mobile Heights, the Skåne cluster organization for mobile communication. He is also Chairman of Innovation Skåne, owned by Region Skåne and support innovative businesses in Skåne, with particular focus on healthcare.

Previously, he worked in the Ericsson sphere for 20 years, including in Silicon Valley in the US, where he spent five years establishing and building up Sony Ericsson's research and development office.

I am very happy to have such an experienced person as Mats Ekstrand to coordinate work on e-health and m-health. There are great expectations of what can be achieved in health care with new technology. Skåne, which is prominent in both medical research and industry, including mobile communications, are positioned to lead the development in this area. But first we must ensure that the basic features are in place and functioning. This may involve, for example, booking times at the health centers and the renewal of prescriptions, says Regional Director Alf Jönsson.

Digitalization has conquered one area after another, and all companies are affected by it in some way. It now stands at the door of health care. This is a trend all over the world, but it has not yet really begun in earnest, said Mats Ekstrand.

Broad experience

Mats Ekstrand has also acted as advisor to the State Agency for Innovation Systems, Vinnova, and corporate and  Medicon Village in Lund. From this, he has good knowledge about the public support system for innovation and for national programs available for health care.

I think it is more important that we are good at realizing what is meant by digitizing healthcare. For many people, both citizens and employees of Region Skåne, there may be a vague concept with different interpretations. Most important for Region Skåne is that we are taking one step at a time and well-founded. Digitalization will support business by making it more accessible to patients and families, said Mats Ekstrand.

Mats Ekstrand will work from May 1 part time as a strategic advisor for e-health and m-health, and increases August 1 to full time. He reports directly to the Regional Director Alf Jönsson and will sit in the Group management.
